I was a little deflated to get a shrug of disbelief from my mum, who thought I was blagging and trying to avoid the inevitable, so a few days later when the letter – that lifeline – dropped through the letterbox, I confronted my mum with the reality that she was going to have to support me for a few more years. Mum was always keen for me to further my education, and was always very supportive, but my dad felt it was another waste of time and money. In his family people had always worked from a young age.
My old boss had taken a keen interest in my work and kept in touch after my departure from his company, and I’d mentioned to him that I was leaving to pursue my own works and set up a gallery. I only really said ‘gallery’ because I thought it added a level of intent and seriousness to my vague plans, so when he called me to say he had a space that was sitting empty and I could use it for a gallery, I was nervous and daunted by the very notion. While I had every belief in the artists, I knew nothing about running a business, let alone a gallery.
It was another wake up call that my continued stoner approach had to stop: this truly was my last chance and I had to pull myself together. It was a revelation to meet people on my course who, along with my then girlfriend, showed drive and ambition. At the time, many of my close friends thought this more focused, cleaner version of my former self was odd. It was a weird and somewhat isolating moment to sit with all the guys I rolled with, watching them get baked and not partaking; it suddenly dawned on me that I’d been doing exactly the same thing for years and nothing had changed or progressed – I’d been caught up in an endless, heady green fog.
